Star wars wanderings

While I'm waiting for my copy of "the old republic" to come from amazon.com , I've being playing what is essentially the prequels to the new MMO, "knights of the old republic". I'm a bit of a bioware fan and their dragon age and mass effect worlds are so brilliant, I downloaded this one to see if I could get past the ancient graphics of this game and enjoy it.

11 hours later and I'm only up to act 3. Sure the controls are a bit fidgety, and the graphics are very very average, but the story is done so well and setting the story five thousand years before any of the movies lets you explore many different things, even if the technology and different species/etc haven't changed that much in that time. But, you just nod and agree.

I know everyone's raving on skyrim, and I'll probably get to that eventually, but I'll probably wait till the price goes down. I've never dipped into any of the elder scrolls universe, and it's not like it's going to be gone any time soon...

Also, thanks to a present mixup, I've also got fable 2, which really looks fun. So I've got plenty to keep me going for the time being :)

Dragon Age 2

Media_httpimg101image_ojhhc

Finally finished Dragon Age 2 the other night. I usually take way longer than the average person playing a game. Firstly, cause i am and probably will always be a Noob, and secondly, by the time I buy a game it's either in the bargain bin or at least half the price (well, apart from Mass Effect 3 next year. that's different).

Finally going online and checking the savaging it's getting in reviews, and ... I don't know. I enjoyed it, but I looked at it as another game in the same universe, not as the actual sequel to Origins. Maybe if they named it Dragon Age: Champions? or something like that? People have an expectation that a sequel, whether it be a movie, or game as a continuation, and more of the same. While the story DOES continue on from origins (and overlaps at some points) it's not the same kind of game at all. And hardcore fans of the limited Origins could get past that cause of the great and wonderful storyline they put behind it. I'm the same. I'll play a ten year old game as long as the story and game is engaging. Graphics are good, but not the be all and end all.

I think that's the problem. They put a hell of a lot of effort into jazzing up the graphics, making it a full talkie that I think they should of given themselves maybe even another six months to open up the map a little more. We go to the surrounding areas and that's about it. I suppose in some cases the idea is good as it makes you live with your consequences, but really in the end you're going to have a pretty similar conclusion. The Champion is still going to have to fight the same person.

Speaking of such, maybe it's the lack of "end of game baddie" that hurts it? three quarters in and you still don't know where they're taking this story. Don't get me wrong, the story is GOOD, but it feels like something more out of a TV series. (speaking of, can we have more set in this world apart from one webseries? i'd watch it :P) And the ending? Setting us up for .. Who knows what?? A big war I'm guessing. I'm interested to see how much of the story carries over into the next game. I like the occasional cameo you get from the origins and awakening savefile. It's not essential to the game, but it's kind of rewarding to the hard core players who have gone the hard slog to get through all these games.

Let's just hope that Part 3 is a little mix of both games to make it a good ending to a trilogy :P I dont care if it costs more cause it goes over 2 or 3 discs. I'll end up buying it later anyways ;)

Arias… I like this...

The ARIAS are posting complete full shows of years past...

1987

1997

2007

In other words, watch the destruction of the music industry (and, Silverchair*) in three easy videos! :)

Okay, it was never high art, but 1997's show wasn't bad. These days they're struggling to find airtime for it on TV. And this is meant to be Australia's night of nights for music!!

*Yes I went there with Silverchair. I still believe after his breakdown/illness Daniel Johns was replaced by a shit, happier clone.

Music memeage

Why not? In the middle of nowhere with my 16 GB nano so I CAN'T cheat. My iTunes account would be a better representation, but here we go -

"You can learn a lot about someone by the music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your iPod or mp3 player and write down the first 20 songs. No cheating or skipping songs that are shameful. That is the fun!"

1. NIN - Hurt
2. Pendulum - Witchcraft
3. NIN - Discipline (I have the entire discography on here, so apologies for double ups)
4. The Prodigy - Take me to the hospital (some crappy remix that came with the album which is unfortunately very subpar, and prodigy usually release good remixes)
5. Marina & The diamonds - Oh no! (despite her being pop, she's got this quirky streak that makes me adore her music. Plus she can sing and isn't afraid to try different stuff on her album)
6. Desmond Dekker - 007 (from a crappy live cd, I was looking for a greatest hits)
7. Avenged Sevenfold - The Wicked End
8. Barenaked Ladies - Thanks that was fun
9. Manic Street Preachers - She bathed herself in a bath of bleach (from their latest album. Funnily enough, I enjoy the demo version of the album more so than the proper album)
10. sepultura - The Hunt (still my fave album)
11. the go-betweens - doo wop in 'a' (bam boom)
12. Monty python - penis song (oh dear god. I'm sorry :P)
13. Ben folds - carrying Cathy (I love me some Ben folds music when I'm in the mood. One of my faves is "landed")
14. The beatles - I want to hold your hand (mono) (the Beatles are better in mono. Trufax)
15. Funkoars - the symphony (hillarious crass but brilliant hip hop group for Adelaide. Find them!)
16. Night wish - live to tell the tale (I like both singers)
17. Van halen - on fire
18. The presets - aeons
19. The white stripes & Steve McDonald - fell in love with a girl (this guy from a group called red kross (I think) put out a version of white blood cells with bass guitar all through every song on the album. It's interesting..
20. Propaghandhi - I want you to want me (I love all their work. But this album is fun)

instapaper and kindle

Media_httpwwwocellnet_idqlc

I wish someone told me about this sooner.

I used to go through moments where i would constantly go on my rss list, constantly checking, and then be busy. by the end of that week i would get so bogged down I'd end up just dumping it all by hitting "read all" and regoing. And the "read later" option is handy, but let's be honest, when we get home or finish work, we dont want to be sitting in front of the screens any more than we have to. and reading on the ipad isnt that bad, but still glarey, and also I have to be careful with the battery life on the ipad. Sounds funny, but I use it a fair bit during work days and mucking around with too many apps may lead me into trouble if I get a job by days end.. (I'm eventually getting an external battery charger for this very reason, but I just bought a 4S, so it will have to wait..)

I bought the kindle on a whim one drunk Friday night. It was late, they just dropped the price on the 3 models and I thought "what the hell??". Love the little thing, so much easier to buy a book on there, and whip it out when you have a spare minute to yourself on the road, or eating lunch or whatever. The battery life on this baby isn't as bad as a normal smartphone. I could take it away with me, turn off wifi and be happy it would last pretty much all weekend.
Someone on my twitter list commented on the "export to kindle" option on the instapaper website.
Oh nice... :)

All the article I've been meaning to read are now in little kindle digests where I can read whenever I feel like it. The formatting isn't perfect, but that's more of the websites faults. Sure saves me at the end of a night when I really don't have the willpower to get stuck into one of my novels again.. :)
